Doctor Who Season 11 – Episode One review and what I want to see for the new series

Doctor Who season 11 aired on Sunday the 7th of October on BBC and it already feel very different to previous series of Doctor Who. Jodie Whittaker takes on the role of the Doctor for 2018 and she still has a lot to prove. After the first episode we saw elements of Matt Smith and David Tennant with her own slight spin also, hopefully we see much more as the show progresses. The first episode had an interesting villain but too many side characters to keep up with, having three companions (or friends as they’re now referring to them as) could leave either little room for the Doctor to shine or too little room for the companions to shine. Having a new show runner could do the show some favours, and they have definitely made it feel much different, with a slightly more dramatised edge to it compared to previous series. Having been a fan of Doctor Who since it’s revival in 2005, I’ve grown up watching Doctor Who and Jodie Whittaker still feels like the Doctor to me, but it usually takes a few episodes for me to completely warm to a new Doctor so only time will tell. Capaldi was excellent and brought a deep rooted anger that I enjoyed but I feel this will be more lighthearted and fun, but I still want some emotion, the Doctor is at their best when they are angry I feel, you see the true version of them in that state. So here is what I hope for the new series of Doctor Who:

Returning villains

One of the best parts about Doctor Who is the villains, the classic to even some more recent ones. I would obviously love to see how Whittaker faces against the Daleks, but even the Cybermen, Weeping Angels or even bring back the Slitheen! It is one of the true marks of the Doctor for them to face one of the classic enemies and how they tackle the issue – like seeing Davros in Capaldi’s time as the Doctor was amazing. I understand if the new show runner wants to distinguish themselves from the previous show runners but to not include even one classic villain would be a huge mistake.

A new Tardis and Sonic Screwdriver

Every Doctor has their own distinguishable Tardis interior (sometimes even Exterior too – look at the outside of Tennant’s compared to Smith’s) – apart from Eccleston and Tennant’s being the same – and it usually represent’s their personality. Smith’s was colourful and bright, Capaldi’s was full of books and dark, hopefully Whittaker’s will represent her personality too. The new screwdriver that she gets also – it is very ugly. It looks really strange and hopefully it is just temporary and she gets a new one when she gets to her Tardis.

An arching story-line

When there is a plot line that carries throughout the series it can help to interlink the episodes so that they aren’t forgettable and it makes the finale even better than a random large threat being thrown in at the end. Good examples of this include the ‘Doctor Donna’ and the crack in the wall, making an amazing end to an overarching story.

Places we haven’t seen before

As the Tardis can time travel, it would be very interesting to see some brand new times that we haven’t yet come across – possibly cavemen or dinosaurs or even just more possibilities for the future. Places that stick in my mind are New New York and the Silent Library, so we could see some futuristic versions of places like Tokyo or go to Australia, just maybe not England or America. We could see Samurai warriors or a day of the dead festival or anything.

Some returning friends

It would be amazing to see some old companions and friends come back and interact with a new Doctor. If we saw characters like Captain Jack or even Rose in the alternate universe (if we see her, we could also see David Tennant again as the human version of the Doctor who stayed there with her). We could even revisit characters from the spin off Sarah Jane’s Adventures like Luke and see what they are up to. It would also be amazing to see K-9 return as we haven’t seen him for some time.

So, what do you want from this series? New companions? No Tardis? More weirdness?
